MEXICO TRYING TO FEND OFF FLOOD OF AMERICAN IMMIGRANTS SEEKING CHEAP GAS
April 18 2011
Piedras Negras, Mexico – Recent events and rhetoric would lead a person to believe that the current border issue between Mexico and the United States is a recent phenomenon, though with any rudimentary understanding of history it’s clear that the

issue is a longstanding one. For generations the battle between the two nations over the disposition of their border has been a contentious issue with both sides largely unhappy and totally unresolved as to what form the border should take.
Border disputes between nations are of course nothing new, but rarely has a border become such an important social and economic issue, not only to the two nations involved but also the wider world. After all, whatever happens in the United States ultimately affects the rest of the world. For the last few years much of that debate has centered not so much on the positioning of the border but rather the porous nature of the barrier. In both countries the passage of people back and forth has become a contentious political issue, one that has suddenly shifted in the opposite direction as Mexican officials struggle to deal with a flood of U.S. immigrants jumping the border seeking lower gas prices and a better life.
“We have been made very much aware of the growing cross border problems occurring in many border towns. We have had many reports of people crossing over from the United States into Mexico, apparently seeking inexpensive gasoline. Many of these individuals are not possessing correct paperwork and in fact are travelling
across the border illegally, something we are determined to put a stop to,” said a Mexican government official. “Gasoline and oil are a precious resource and something very much close to the hearts of many Mexicans. We cannot tolerate individuals invading our sovereign space in order to exploit the hard work of the Mexican people. This is not simply an issue of economics, it is also one of sovereignty and something that we must change to protect the long term survival of our nation.”
Piedras Negras has been one of the most heavily hit border towns in recent weeks.
“Everywhere I go it seems I see a Yankee face. A few weeks ago you would never see these people but now they are everywhere. I go to the restaurant and they are there, I go to fill up my car and they are there. They are everywhere and they are taking Mexican jobs,” said one local who preferred not to be named. “They have to go. We have to be able to control our borders so that these people don’t come and take gasoline from hard working Mexicans. One day this town will be totally taken over by these Americans and we have to stop them before they get out of control.”
It’s not clear how many U.S. immigrants have flooded into the town of 140,000 people.
“Gas in the United States is far too expensive. I can’t feed my children and fill up my car anymore and so I have no option except to come to Mexico in order to fill my tank and still live my life. It’s not what I want to do, I love my country, but I don’t have any options any longer,” said one U.S. immigrant who did not want to be identified. “I’d rather buy gasoline in the United States, I’d rather spend all my time there, but this is something I have to do in order to make my life and the lives of my family better and I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure that happens.”
Many immigrants have apparently been sending back gasoline care packages to cities all over the United States.
