NEIL PATRICK HARRIS HAS NO EXCUSES LEFT AFTER NEW YORK LEGALIZES GAY MARRIAGE

June 25 2011

Albany, NY – There were celebrations across New York State, and across the country, last night after New York became the newest state to legalize gay marriage. Joining Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont (and D.C.), stonewall riots
New York passed legislation making same-sex marriage legal in the second largest state in the Union, an act that many believe is the tipping point for widespread acceptance across the United States.

The emotion was palpable across the state as advocates, both gay and straight, celebrated the victory which came, ironically enough, as a result of two Republicans who suddenly switched sides. For many the ruling is a real victory, as much a symbolic success as it is a practical triumph. After all, it was the Stonewall riots in New York City which sparked the gay rights movement in the country leading to the cascade of successes by gay rights advocates in recent years. As political powerfully as the legislation is, it is also a personal victory for many people who are now free to express their love for one another the way heterosexual couples have always been able to do. One of those couples is actor Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka who have been engaged for five years. Now the couple will finally have the opportunity to marry, something at least Harris has been anticipating and dreading for a very long time.neil patrick harris

“I'd sure love to get married. Please, NY Senate, vote in favor of marriage equality today. My family would really appreciate it,” Harris Tweeted before the announcement. “It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night! David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date.”

Couples will be able to marry in thirty days. It’s not clear if Harris and Burtka have set a date.

“The passing of this legislation does not mean that it will translate to other states. In fact, it could actuall inhibit the spread in some areas. I’d imagine we will see a handful of the more progressive states move towards legalization, but conservative states will likely start to batten down the hatches and take aggressive action towards preventing gay marriage. When it was smaller states no one worried, but now that a big one has done the deed, opponents will step up their attacks,” said Scrape TV American analyst Dave Davidson. “It is still a big step though and it will change things in a lot of places. Whether people like to admit it or not, a lot of states still follow New York’s lead. It was always the gateway to America and now it may very well be the gateway to gay marriage, at least in some states.”

California, Texas, and Florida all have high numbers of gay couples but have not legalized marriage.neil patrick harris david burtka

“What this really means of course is that a lot of men and women are going to have to step up. It’s easy to say yes to something when you know it can’t possibly happen, but now that the day has finally arrived you have to step up or step out and I think Harris, as well as thousands of other people, have likely  started to second guess their choices,” continued Davidson. “You fight and fight for something and then you finally have it and now you have to make good. It’s a tough thing, especially with marriage. As much as you love the person, actually going forward with the thing is something else entirely. It seems like NPH will now have no choice and he may start to regret being such a vocal advocate.”

Harris and Burtka also have a home in California, where NPH is expected to spend a lot more time in the next few months.
