NEW CUBA RULES ALLOW STATES TO STOP CUTTING UP MAPS
January 17 2011
Washington, D.C. – There are few stories in the world like the story of modern Cuba. No country of the size of that nation has ever played such a major part in the history of the world, a nation that once nearly drove the planet and species into a nuclear
apocalypse. Few countries of any size could claim such a profound impact on the world, and even into the modern era, the country continues its long legacy of being the thorn in the side of the biggest superpower in history.
Cuba’s story though isn’t just one of conflict. True, corruption and crime ruled the first half of the Twentieth century in that country, and armed rebellion and dictatorship ruled the second half, but the story of Cuba goes well beyond that. As the most successful country, by far, in the Caribbean the nation has been a sort of shining light throughout Americas in terms of basic standards of living. True no place may be Manhattan, but few would argue that living in Cuba would be much worse than living in the slums of Memphis either. That simply could not be said for any other nation in the area, and all of that was done at the opposition and interference of the giant to the north. Decades of anger and confrontation with The United States has made Cuba a pariah,
something that may be finally changing after President Obama made moves to open up the borders with the once hated nation.
“These changes will not aid in ushering in respect for human rights and they certainly will not help the Cuban people free themselves from the tyranny that engulfs them. These changes undermine U.S. foreign policy and security objectives and will bring economic benefits to the Cuban regime,” said U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. “This opening of the borders will allow a more normal relationship with the country and allow families who have been separated from their loved ones for so long to re-establish relationships.”
Many travel restrictions to the country have been lifted, something like sought after by the travel agency.
“The reality is that many, many people still want to travel to Cuba. These aren’t just people who have family in the country, it is regular Americans many of whom travel regularly to the surrounding countries but simply aren’t allowed to step foot inside Cuba because of these restrictions. Now we are finally taking steps to change that, hopefully for good,” said Dwight Waters of Travel International. “I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me about those holes in the map. I mean few people ask about going to Cuba because they know it isn’t allowed but they always ask about the Cuba shaped hole in the maps and it is annoying. It also makes the maps really tough to fold, the hole just causes the maps to bunch up. Hopefully this will help change all that.”
It’s not immediately clear if Cuba will be re-established on travel maps. States are able to make their own decisions as to whether the country can be placed on globes and maps in schools.
“This isn’t a normalization of relations. This isn’t going to be like Canada anytime soon but it is a step forward and that means good things for
Cuban-Americans but also for travel seekers. The country itself really is beautiful,” said Scrape TV Weather analyst Graham Gilliam. “Temperate weather all year round, a kind of wet heat but it never gets really sticky. True there is the occasional hurricane but that can happen anywhere. I would really encourage people to take the opportunity to visit there if they get the chance, it’s quite beautiful.”
Only New York and Connecticut allow Cuba on their maps.
