NEW YORK ALLOWS SAME SEX CAT MARRIAGE BUT PREDICT HARD TIMES FOR THE COUPLE
January 22 2011
New York, NY – In all the debate that humans have in respect to sexuality we often forget that we are not too far removed from our animal brethren. After all, sex is a fundamental part of all life on our planet. As pleasurable and engaging as it is, sex is,
in the big picture, about breeding, which sustains the long term existence of all life. Every species of life has sex in one way or another, and for intelligent species sex can often lead to something more.
Many animals other than humans pair up. Wolves, eagles, voles, swans, angel fish, and gibbons are just a few of the many animals on our planet that mate for life, forming pair bonds much the same as human beings. Like everything though, humans do things little differently. Our formalized form of pair bonding through marriage is easily the most organized form of mating on the planet and as such has taken on a life of its own, independent of any kind of breeding instinct. Because marriage has become so important and so valuable to human life, it makes sense that we have started to move the process over to other animals, particularly ones which we value highly. Now a new law in New York is breaking down new barriers to marriage, allowing the first same-sex cat marriage on record, despite many reservations from critics.
“We are very happy to be able to hold this wedding in New York. Marriage is a great institution and we are so happy that Bruno and Solomon will finally be able to enjoy the highs and lows that human beings have enjoyed for so long,” said a spokesperson for Ollie’s Place, where the felines have been living. “All of their friends, both feline and human, will be in attendance at the ceremony. Their love goes beyond normal bounds, beyond love, beyond species, and beyond gender and we are thrilled that they will finally be able to formalize that love.”
Same sex marriage between humans is still not performed in New York State, though is recognized.
“I have to say that this marriage is a good thing for gay and lesbian rights across the board, but I think unfortunately in the long term it may end poorly for the couple. That could also do damage for same-sex marriage amongst all species in the state as well, though we’d have to wait and see on that,” said a spokesperson for GLAAD. “Obviously we are happy whenever a loving couple, regardless of their gender or species, is able to marry, but we do not want people rushing willy-nilly into marriage simply to stand for their rights. Marriage should always be between a dedicated pair and should never be done for political reasons. If this marriage breaks down, it will only damage all the advances we have made.”
Some have accused Ollie’s Place and parent organization Mighty Mutts of orchestrating the marriage to drum up support for the shelters.
“I don’t want to say this is a sham marriage. The couple does seem to be honestly affectionate with one another and it’s very hard to fake that kind of affection, particularly amongst cats, but one has to be suspicious considering what the people behind the deal have to gain,” said Scrape TV Family Values analyst Marge Hendricks. “Hopefully it’s honest, hopefully they are not only in love but they are also ready for marriage and not just being forced into it because of the needs and wants of the people around them. I am a sucker for love stories, hopefully this is a good one.”
Reports indicate that the gift registry actually funneled funds back to the shelter.
