PROPOSAL TO SINK BUFFALO AND CREATE NEW GREAT LAKE STILL ON THE TABLE
February 4 2011
Albany, NY – There are many manmade wonders in the world, from the Great Wall to the Pyramids, which show the ingenuity and creative spirit of the human mind. The vast majority of those creations are of course in the Old World, Africa, Europe, and
Asia. Because of the relatively limited population throughout the America’s until recent times, the sheer number of creations simply couldn’t exist. There are some to be sure, such as Machu Picchu and arguably, New York City, but only a small percentage compared to the rest of the world.
That differential is unlikely to change. Many of those great accomplishments from the past are things that simply no longer needed in the modern world, having given way to other advances, many of which have come from the New World, things such as telephones, the internet, and cars are certainly not as awe inspiring but are far more impactful on the human experience. Still, our lust for wonder never ceases and while the natural world has certainly impressed in the Americas, there is still room for improvement. Case-in-point is a long standing proposal to add to one of the great attractions in North America, the Great Lakes, by sinking Western New York State and filling the entire area with water which has recently gained new interest on both sides of the border.
“It has been an idea for a long time that we carve out a new lake in the region, carving out a large chunk of land and giving the area an entirely new look. The proposal essentially proposes sinking the area from Buffalo to Binghamton and allowing it to fill with water, thereby creating a new great lake,” said a state spokesperson. “This will of course change the topography of the region dramatically but we feel that any limitations that it may provide will be outweighed by the benefits including jobs and energy creation. The idea is very much on the board again.”
The new lake would likely wipe out all of the western part of the state bordering Canada. The proposal has gained support from both the New York and Ontario governments.
“Obviously a lot of people would be inconvenienced having their homes and jobs
completely destroyed and flooded but this would be the first time something like this has gone on. Building dams for example often requires this kind of sacrifice and ultimately it works to the benefit of the entire region, as we feel this will do,” said one of the supporters of the bill. “At the same time it will allow us to get rid of that whole area which, frankly, has been an ongoing embarrassment for the state. That kind of pseudo hick thing going on there is really not something we want representing the state and this would clean that up. Just sink the whole thing and be done with it.”
It is not believed that the proposal allocates any funds for the relocation of people in that area, leaving them to find their own way out and having to find places where people will accept them.
“For us it is a simple equation. We will close the bridges and mine all access points. We simply will not allow a flood of Western New Yorkers into the province on a permanent basis. They are most welcome to come for a day or two, but not to live here permanently,” said a spokesperson for the Ontario government. “We feel that this change would benefit us on both sides of the border and we are most certainly in support of the idea of creating this lake, however certain guarantees will have to be made. We will not accept a flood, so to speak, of refugees from Buffalo in this country. Whatever happens to them on their side of the border, well that’s their problem.”
A poll of Buffalo residents showed that the majority had no idea what the pollster was talking about.
