TORNADO THE CHIEF SUSPECT IN DISAPPEARANCE OF IOWA TOWN
April 12 2011
Mapleton, IA – There are many stories all over the world of ghost towns, places that once held bustling lives and for one reason or another simply fell off the map, literally. While there is a certain romance to those types of places, particularly when they carry

with them the reputation of housing actual ghosts, often the reasons places are abandoned are not all that romantic. Places like Pripyat, Ukraine or Centralia, Pennsylvania certainly suffered major traumas but most abandoned places fell for much more mundane reasons such as bad economic times.
Sometimes, though, mysteries do still occur, mysteries that defy even the basic of logic and reason at least on the surface. While no towns have ever fallen into the Bermuda Triangle, mysteriously losing populations with no explanations, sometimes the understanding of what exactly did happen is hard to fathom. Those types of stories repeat themselves over and over again with most people tending towards the mysterious rather than the simple, exactly the kind of debate that is starting over a small town in Iowa which has almost entirely disappeared. While early and official reports indicate that it was a tornado which ripped through the town,
destroying more than half of the buildings and residents, but locals are not so convinced believing instead that something much darker and more dangerous decided the fate of humble little Mapleton.
“It was huge, just huge. It just kept getting bigger and bigger. It's not a pretty sight. It's something nobody has seen in this town. I know I don’t want to see anything like that again, not in our small town and not anywhere,” said one local resident who claimed to have witnessed the tornado. “This is just a small town and we aren’t used to these kinds of things. I’m really glad it’s over and I hope it never happens again.”
Officials estimate that 60 percent of the town was destroyed and resulted in only a handful of minor injuries, however many have noted that a number of the 1200 residents of the town haven’t been seen since the event.
“I don’t know what happened to him. He was here before the thing happened but he
hasn’t been around since. I’ve tried his cell a bunch of times but it just keeps going to message. Everyone I’ve talked has said that they’ve seen him, some even told me where, but he’s never anywhere,” said another resident speaking of a friend. “They say he’s at the bowling alley, but the bowling alley is gone. They say he’s at the Target, but he’s not there. Everywhere people say he is, he isn’t and it’s started to feel like people are lying to me, like they actually know he’s gone and are trying to keep me in the dark for some reason. I’m actually afraid that I might actually be next.”
Mapleton has had dozens of reports of missing people in the last few years, far in excess of the national average.
“This is a small town and we have just gone through a traumatic experience. While we certainly are very thankful for everyone’s good wishes and help, we would ask that outsiders stay out of our business. We are a close knit town, more of a family than anything and we prefer to keep it that way,” said Mayor Fred Standa. “We have a experienced a great trauma here and it will take a long time for us to rebuild, but that is exactly what we will do. All of us, every single one of us here in this town will help rebuild what has been lost and we will do it by ourselves without help from outsiders. That is the end of the story.”
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad initially issued an emergency proclamation for the town before mysteriously rescinding the order only hours later.
