U.S. COAST A LITTLE DAMP AFTER EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI KILLS HUNDREDS IN JAPAN
March 11 2011
San Francisco, CA – After an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, shaking the northern coastal region and setting off a massive Tsunami that stretched across the region and towards the west coast of the Americas. Early
reports indicate a death toll reaching into the thousands and billions of dollars in damage to the country. Damage was experienced as far south as Tokyo in the south after one of the largest quakes ever recorded.
While Japanese officials assess the full scale of the damage, and prepare for aftershocks, the world is coming to the aid of the country with many countries pledging their support for the people of Japan. While the country is undoubtedly familiar with such events, and as such has politely declined most offers for aid, other countries are far less equipped to deal with such disasters. With multiple nations facing the Pacific, panic across the area was palpable with many nations evacuating citizens from coastal regions. No area was perhaps more affected by the giant wave than the west coast of the United States where the giant wave has shaken boats in harbour and gotten more than a few ankles wet.
“This is totally not what I was expecting today. Frankly, it’s the last thing I needed. It’s Friday today and I was already planning on leaving early. We were taking the family on a trip to my cousin’s cabin this weekend and we wanted to get started early, before the traffic really became a problem, but now it looks like I’m going to be staying late and that really makes me angry,” said one local fisherman. “I came in and the boats were sloshing all over the place and it was just too dangerous to take them out. Even now, I mean some people have gone out but the water is restless and it’s probably only going to get worse. This is really the last thing I needed today.”
The fisherman still plans on taking the family away, but is really concerned about the traffic.
“This is a massive tragedy, on a scale that people in this city are very accustomed to
unfortunately. Our hearts go out to the people of Japan but our immediate concern is our own community. There are many fishermen whose livelihood is threatened by these events, and people who rely on those fishermen are equally threatened,” said a spokesperson for the San Francisco mayor’s office. “Just outside the building here I was stopped by a bait salesman whose been struggling like everyone else in this economy. He relies on every sale he makes throughout the week and today he sold nothing, which is devastating to his ability to feed his family. For that reason we are enacting emergency measures to aid all of those hard working men and women whose weekends have been so ruined by this disaster.”
The mayor went ahead with his weekend plans despite the disaster.
“The Earth is a restless place and this is very clear evidence of that. As we saw in New
Zealand a few weeks ago, just as we see here in Japan, these events can strike anytime

and with little or no warning, and the effects aren’t just limited to the obvious people,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “Obviously the people who are going to be most affected by this event are those nearest to the epicentre whose homes and workplaces have been destroyed by the event. They will spend a long time picking up the pieces but it’s the innocent victims in all this who are the real tragedy, the fishermen in San Francisco, the cruise ships in Alaska, these are the people who really suffer. They are the innocent bystanders yet their lives have been turned upside down by all of this. Hopefully they will be able to recover quickly.”
Many beachgoers across California were also forced to go home early in the wake of rising waters.
