U.S. EXPANDING CANADIAN BORDER FENCE, DMZ POSSIBLE
October 1 2011
Washington, D.C. – Ten years removed from the 9/11 attacks and with the majority of major terrorist threats either eliminated or pushed to the point of irrelevancy, it would be hard to argue that increased security precautions in the United States are still tied to that event. Instead, it’s far more sensible to assume that increased security is just the way America is today, a new way of eating rather than a diet.
There is no better evidence of that than in increasing security precautions along the Canadian border, which have now expanded into another realm. What was once the largest unsecured border on the planet has quickly become a security nightmare with travellers being stopped in both directions routinely. Now things may get even tougher as the U.S. steps up its presence, adding new security tools which may include a massive border fence and, possibly in the future, a demilitarized zone all in an effort to keep illegals from pouring over the border.
“There are a number of recommendations we are considering at the moment but a border fence is one that is getting the most attention. Simply put, we have found it to be incredibly effective along the southern border and that shows that it can also be effective here as well,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security. “It will most certainly be more difficult to implement here, given the size of the border and the varying terrain, but we feel that no matter the cost it is essential to protecting our border.”
While some have been concerned about the porous border, allowing terrorists to cross, the biggest problem in recent years have been Canadians travelling to the country to shop with their powerful Canadian dollars which has routinely bought more than U.S. money.
“While we certainly do appreciate tourism, it is a burden when people are spending money worth more than our own. Essentially, they are getting more for their money than Americans. For ordinary tourism that is not an issue, but Canadians go on shopping trips, crossing back later in the day and that is hurting border business,” continued the spokesperson. “We are also concerned that countries like Russia and China have been buying up Canadian dollars and may provide an undue influence on the politics of the country, which could pose problems for the future. While we are still far from certain measures, some are being implemented immediately.”
Additional cameras and security personnel have been added to all official border crossings, particularly in Ontario and British Columbia. Huge portions of the border, though, are completely unprotected.
“The United States has an obligation to protect its borders, period. We can’t be concerned that this will offend other nations or that people may protest. Our obligation is to secure our borders from any and all invaders, from the south, the north, or anywhere in between,” said a congressional insider. “We hope that this program will continue, we will make it a priority for Congress and for whomever is the next President. Protecting our northern border is essential to the long term security of this country and we will not relent on it no matter the cost.”
Machine gun towers are currently being installed in the busy New York and Michigan crossing points.
