WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S COMES TO LIFE IN DENVER

Denver, CO – There aren’t many movies about a pair of friends using the body of a wealthier person for their own gain, but there was ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’. That much loved 1980’s flick detailed the story of two ambitious young workers who accidentally stumble across the body of their dead boss and instead of calling the police, become involved in a high stakes murder mystery with millions of dollars at the end, all with the dead boss in tow.
Most people would assume, on hearing the plot of that movie, that it was complete fiction. That the movie was just the silly musings of an imaginative screenwriter, something which should never be attempted in real life. However, that is not what two Denver men believed, using the plot of the movie almost exactly to pull off their own crime.
According to police, Robert Young and Mark Rubinson stumbled across the body of their dead friend and, exactly as was portrayed in the movie, used his money to party and took the body out for one last ride. The pair took their friend, 43-year old Jeff Jarrett, out to breakfast, Viva Burrito for lunch, and eventually to a strip club before being discovered and arrested.
“This is the first type of case we have had like this in the Denver area to my recollection. Traditionally when people find a human body they report it to police rather than taking it out for a joyride. We have not seen a case like this in Denver,” said a police spokesperson. “We are very aware of the similarities to the motion 
picture that has been mentioned, however we have not yet found any connection to that film. In fact, we are not even sure the pair has seen the movie. They could have thought of this on their own, or simply heard the plot of the movie somewhere along the line.”
‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ was released in 1989 to healthy box office. A sequel was released four years later to a much more tepid reception.
“Unfortunately this incident is not as amusing as that film. The type of hijinks that ensued in this incident are not the stuff of Hollywood motion pictures. We do not recommend this type of action by anyone. Please, do not emulate what you see on screen,” continued the spokesperson. “As much as you may be tempted to do so, this type of thing is simply not acceptable and you will be arrested for doing things like this. Please, we are urging people to not attempt this type of thing in the future.”
Police in Boulder reported a similar incident where a body had been shoved into a suitcase and tickets to the Virgin Islands were purchased, but that effort was thwarted in time.
“I would imagine that most people don’t see an opportunity like this come up very often and it’s perfectly understandable that you would be tempted to make this effort, I mean you don’t have many chance like that in life. Still, it’s crime and people need to understand that,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “I would recommend that if people are going to try and replicate the plots of eighties movies they try things a little more innocuous, like say jumping on a parade float and singing or joining the police academy. This is a just not okay, not for anyone.”
In a similar case, a man was recently arrested in Denver in March for romancing a department store mannequin he claimed was alive.
