WOMAN SEXUALLY ASSAULTED BY GADDAFI TROOPS MOLESTED BY TSA ON TRIP TO U.S.
June 7 2011
New York, NY – Poets, authors, painters, filmmakers, and all other sorts of artists have tried to portray the horrors of war, to articulate just how awful the experience can be and thus pass it on to the world at large. For the most part, that fails. It
doesn’t fail because of the attempt or because of some failed political agenda, but rather because the raw human experience of any event can never be truly understood by a third party. To truly experience something, you need to experience it, and fortunately for most people, war is something they never get a chance to experience.
For people who do have those experiences, people who actually have to endure the trauma which occurs in war, they are not things which ever go away. Those experiences are relived over and over again, appearing in small moments which most people wouldn’t think twice about. For those people the potency of that experience is on the other extreme and something they run from rather than towards. That is very much the case for Iman al-Obeidi, the woman who became internationally known after being raped by pro-Gaddafi forces during the early days of that country’s Civil War. Now al-Obeidi has freed herself of the conflict in that country, only to face a fresh trauma on a trip to the United States and the strange groping hands of TSA agents upon her arrival.
“It was very difficult to see her leave but I know it was the best thing for her. She needed to leave the country, she needed to go someplace else and be free to live free of this experience. We just want a chance for her to be treated psychologically and to

rest. My sister has just been through so much,” said Marwa al-Obeidi on Sunday. “She has a chance to be free and sane in this world and that is something she deserves. I want nothing but the best for my sister and hopefully she can have that.”
Unfortunately, reports indicate that when she arrived in the States she was forced to undergo a thorough investigation by some very grabby TSA agents.
“Our agents are trained to deal with everyone in an effective way. No one person is chosen to be investigated or to not be investigated because of who they are. Everyone is treated in the same manner no matter who they are or what their recent experiences might have been,” said a spokesperson for the TSA. “In this case it is unfortunate that the person involved experienced these things in her homeland, but that does not preclude the need to keep our airports safe and secure. Our agents conducted their investigation respectfully and thoroughly and that is all we can ever ask of them. We apologize if Ms. al-Obeidi was uncomfortable, but these are the rules and everyone must follow them.”
Al-Obeidi refused to travel through the x-ray scanners and instead opted for the pat down.
“For someone in such a traumatized state, experiencing something like this so soon afterwards can have a cataclysmic effect. Patients who endure severe sexual assaults

are often very sensitive to touching by anyone, even husbands and boyfriends, for extended periods following their assaults. There is no doubt that al-Obeidi will be experiencing some of that,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “Unfortunately there are no real procedures for dealing with victims of gang rape. I don’t think that’s a deliberate thing, it’s just got limited bureaucratic need. I mean how often do you see women who are raped by a gang of soldiers come through airport security? It’s just not all that common, though they this does illustrate the need to perhaps come up with a solution to that particular problem, just in case it happens again.”
Al-Obeidi will reportedly fly to Washington after a brief stay in New York, where she will once again have to face her attackers.
