AIR FORCE DEPLOYS LASERS IN FIGHT AGAINST WEED INFESTATIONS
November 12 2011
Washington, D.C. – There isn’t a homeowner in the world that hasn’t been vexed at one point or another by weeds. Whether it’s the yellow plague of dandelions or some other, occasionally much more destructive, invasion the song remains the same. Weeds are a nuisance at the very least and on occasion a menace.
The problem of weed control has only become more problematic in recent years with new rules and regulations limiting the type and amount of methods used to control their spread. The reduction in the use of pesticides and an inability for new technologies to really keep up with the strength of those tools has resulted in a lot of frustration for people and institutions. Luckily new technologies are on the way and a new experiment by the U.S. Air Force may be just the ticket for finally controlling the problem once and for all.
Instead of taking the traditional route, using chemicals, the new program will allow soldiers to deploy high tech energy weapons, namely lasers, to rid government facilities of their weed problem forever. While still in the planning stages, the new technique may eventually work its way down to regular users, putting an end to all weeds across the country, and the world, once and for all.
"Develop a device that uses directed energy technology to prevent and abate unwanted plants in areas that require control or defoliation. The purpose of this system will be the removal of unwanted plants and keep seeds from germinating," reads the details of the new program which will allow the use of various types of `directed energy weapons` against the out of control weed program.
The U.S. government spends millions every year on weed control. The intent of the new program is to permanently erase any need for future operations by obliterating the ability of the ground to sow new plants.
Salt is traditionally used for such activities. It`s not clear if that will be a part of the new program.
The new laser program also plans to protect wildlife, either from special lasers or special laser-proof animals. The cost of the program is not completely clear.
"In many ways this does make a lot of sense, getting rid of the weeds permanently rather than having to deal with them on a recurring basis. There may be a high initial outlay in terms of cost, but eventually it will pay dividends and make life a whole lot easier for everyone," said Scrape TV Military analyst Michael Kent. "Plus, it`s pretty cool. I mean everyone likes lasers, even a little bit, and to know that they have reached the level of effectiveness where they can actually be used against persistent pests is a very comforting thing. The next stage will have to be figuring out a way to kill terrorists with lasers and not harm regular people, but that it probably a ways off."
Some smaller weed control companies have already begun experimenting with the new lasers for domestic use.
