ELIZABETH SMART NOT SEEN OR HEARD FROM SINCE GETTING ENGAGED TO OLDER MAN
January 22 2012
Salt Lake City, UT – There are few nightmares as potent for parents than the one in which their child is taken in the night. Aside from the fear of not knowing that inevitably overcomes parents when the child goes missing, the hard reality is that when it happens the children rarely turn up alive. Most of the time, in fact, they are dead before people even realize they are gone.
Every now and then that mechanism changes, however, and the child somehow returns to the family certainly not undamaged, but alive. In 2003 that was exactly happened to the Smart family when their daughter Elizabeth reappeared after 9 months in a case the shocked and delighted people all around the world.
Smart’s rebirth of sorts was most certainly an isolated case, one that was not typical of such kidnappings, but still it was a heartwarming tale made even more heartwarming by her remarkable emotional recovery from the abuse she suffered at the hands of her kidnappers. Now Smart has moved on with her life in an even more profound way, getting engaged and, presumably, on the path towards starting her own family. Details about Smart’s fiancée were not released but it is widely assumed that he is an older man.
“We're very excited for her. She told us at home last Saturday. I wasn't really surprised. They've been very happy together. We're just thrilled. We're looking
forward to her moving on to this next stage and leading a very happy life,” Ed Smart, Elizabeth’s father, told People magazine.” I know they're looking at a summer
wedding. They're still in the process of planning the wedding, and there are a lot of details to still be worked out.”
The couple will likely avoid June 5, the tenth anniversary of Smart’s abduction which is a Tuesday anyway.
It’s not clear what might be wrong with fiancée Matthew Gilmour, but that will likely come out in a book somewhere down the line.
“This is really great news, at least on the surface. I would, however, be concerned about the long-term viability of the relationship. Smart does appear to have made an incredible recovery from what happened to her but these types of things can take a long time to heal and sometimes they never really do,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “It is possible, likely even, that this will come up again somewhere down the line, that she will suddenly snap or that her husband will do something that sets her off. These events are never fully gone and Smart’s case was extreme even by these standards.”
Smart has become a child rights advocate, meaning she is never really far from the things that happened to her.
“The human mind is really complex and we are still only on the cusp of understanding how extreme levels of abuse and stress affect it over the long term. It’s something that can suddenly flare up and cause serious damage. This fiancée will either have to be a remarkable man or just naive, and the latter would not be good,” continued Welp. “The good news is that he has continued to allow Smart to see her family. Hopefully that will continue. Hopefully she doesn’t start to feel trapped in the marriage over the long term, which can happen, because that could spark a reoccurrence and bad times for the couple.”
Smart has not been seen or heard from since the announcement.
