FLORIDA MAY BE THE FIRST STATE TO REPEAL DWARF TOSSING LAWS
October 8 2011
Tallahassee, FL – When one thinks of Florida the thought of rebellion is usually not the first things that comes to mind. Disney World, beaches, bikinis, old people, trailer parks. All those things certainly come to mind but rebellion is certainly not one of them, at least until now.
Representative Ritch Workman has grown tired of that status, and grown tired of the way his government has stood in the way of job creation efforts and has decided to do something about it. The Republican rep has decided to make it a new goal to eliminate the controversial dwarf tossing law in the state and finally return little people to a profession to which they are uniquely suited.
“I'm on a quest to seek and destroy unnecessary burdens on the freedom and liberties of people. All that it does is prevent some dwarfs from getting jobs they would be happy to get,” said Workman of his plan. “In this economy, or any economy, why would we want to prevent people from getting gainful employment?”
Dwarf tossing has been outlawed in the state for more than two decades. Only a few states have outlawed the practice.
The effort has been met with outrage by advocates but a great deal of support from dwarves themselves, especially considering the economic conditions in the country.
“I’ve been tossed in just about every bar in the South but not in my home state. It isn’t great money but its money and it’s pretty easy to earn. I would very much like to be able to work closer to home, if for no other reason than to save on travel costs. That really eats into the profits,” said Dave the Dwarf, a southern legend. “It’s really unfair that I can’t be tossed in my own home state. It’s never been fair and I totally support this effort. If nothing else, it will reduce all the illegal dwarf tossing that goes on which can be really unsafe.”
It’s estimated that illegal dwarf tossing in the state generates thousands of dollars in undeclared revenue every year, part of the motivation for the efforts to change the law.
Many dwarves in the state have found difficulty getting regular work, due in part to the large carny and white trash population in the state which just finds them so darned cute.
“There are a number of reasons that this practice has been outlawed but the biggest of them is safety and dignity. Little people should not be sources of amusement, they are people like everyone else. Well, smaller but still very similar,” said a spokesperson for The Little People of America. “This is highly dangerous and lawmakers should be making an effort to crack down rather than legitimizing it. If this law passes we could very likely be seeing dwarves flying all across the state of Florida and maybe beyond. We need to think of better ways for little people to find work rather than having them tossed around by drunken fools.”
As an alternative employment opportunity, Disney World had apparently been developing a Lord of the Rings attraction which could have brought work to state. It was halted after they determined there was too little interest.
