FLORIDA SCHOOL GIVING OUT GRADES TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER

November 18 2011

Charlotte County, FL – For some, grades are all that counts. Face with the realities of future schooling, potential jobs, and income into adulthood some people will do whatever they can to get the best possible grades in school in the hopes of achieving some level of happiness later in life.report card

Schools, of course, also want their students to achieve. After all, much of the economic infrastructure of schools is based on the success or failure of their students. The better the students do, the more money comes into the facility, something very much on the minds of administrators struggling to make ends meet.

Now a new pilot program in Florida has worked to find a possible solution to both of those problems by allowing students to purchase higher grades. That program, though, has fallen afoul of many teaching experts concerned that less advantaged students would find themselves left further and further behind, prompting the school to shut down the program and claim that it was never official policy.

“This is one of the most disturbing events I’ve seen in my 40 years,” said Douglas Whittaker, Superintendent for Charlotte County.teacher

One teacher, Jeff Spires, has been suspended for participating in the program which saw students pay upwards of $40 for better grades. It’s not yet clear how many other teachers were involved in the program or whether or not they will be disciplined as well.

Spires reportedly charged more than other teachers and school officials believe he may have been pocketing the difference, which led to the suspension.

“I liked Mr. Spires. He was a pretty good teacher and he always went the extra little bit to help us out but he was just way too expensive. Some of my other teachers would give a better grade for way less and that just sucks. He shouldn’t have charged so much,” said one student at the school who preferred to remain anonymous. “It just wasn’t fair that he was charging so much and I bet that someone told on him because of that. I hope now the prices will stay down.”

The school has temporarily suspended the program pending an investigation, meaning that students will likely have to work to get their grades up.   cash money

“This type of program has been attempted before in various formats and it has always fallen apart. There just isn’t a viable a model for paying for grades, whether through cash, labour, or sexual favours, that seems to work well for everyone and this appears to be just one more of those cases,” said Scrape TV Education analyst Ken Ridley. “You always end up with these types of abuses, people trying to get a little more than they are owed and that always causes problems. It’s a shame, really, because all it does is hurt the kids and that’s the last thing anyone wants.”

In this case, the issue also hurt the teacher’s bank account.
