NOW GUANTANAMO GUARDS READING INMATE MAIL

November 5 2011

Washington, D.C. – As tough as prison can be, surely no prison is quite as tough as life inside Guantanamo. True, there is little harassment or even interaction with other inmates, but all of the inmates in that facility have been held with years without charge of any kind and no indication of what their future may hold, good or bad.g bay guards

Faced with that reality, as well as poor treatment at the hands of guards, many in the now infamous prison have had little to keep themselves sane, and now with new revelations, that even their mail isn’t safe, it’s likely that the situation for them will only get worse.

The revelation of those intercepts – which included correspondence with lawyers – has put a new black mark on the facility and prompted many to once again call for its closure, or at minimum for authorities to respect the right of prisoners to at least one of the basic rights afforded people living in regular societies.

“Violations of the attorney-client privilege are acutely egregious in the context of death penalty litigation where the Supreme Court has long held that heightened due process applies. It is important to note that the legal materials discussed are not classified,” read a letter written by nine of the attorneys representing individuals in the prison. mailman

The details of the letters have not been made public, but authorities at the prison are apparently getting a pretty good chuckle out of most of them.

The policy changed last month with the introduction of a new commander , Rear Admiral David B. Woods, who also frequently goes through his wife’s mail.

“One of the most basic rules of conduct in respect to mail is that it is sacred, perhaps one of our most important values. Mail is to be read by the individuals being addressed and when that changes it has to be done for a very good reason. Odds are, frankly, this isn’t one of those times,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “There is very little chance that an inmate is going to be sending anything dangerous to his lawyer, either in words or in actions, and that alone should mean that it is left alone. Beat them, stress them, deny them food but leave their mail alone.”soldier reading mail

All other techniques have remained in place since Woods took charge, methods he has shown no desire to change.

“Keeping people in prison for years without even charging them is bad enough but now, going through their personal correspondences, well that goes above and beyond and if anything could prompt a new look at closing the facility it’s this, this egregious violation of human rights,” continued Weston. “Even terrorists on the street are able to send mail without it being read by others and quite frequently that does have things like bombs in it. That should be our standard and anything less than that is a violation of basic human rights.”

Woods, when he is at home, also waits outside his parents home for the mail to arrive, which he reads and then stuffs in the mailbox.
