OCCUPY L.A. LEAVES BEHIND PLENTY OF WORK FOR CITY TRASH COLLECTORS
December 1 2011
Los Angeles, CA – Much has been written about the Occupy movements that have been occurring across the United States, and the world, over the last few months and much of it has been as confused as the movement itself. While few, outside the harshest conservative hawks, would argue about the intentions of the movement, the drive to protest itself, the focus of the events has been a little sketchy at best and resulted in little or nothing of consequence.
Thus, the lasting influence of the movement has serious limitations. Nothing fundamental changed, no grand vision was put forth, nothing, in short, really happened at all. The protests very quickly became something unto themselves, protest for the sake of protest with no real lasting impact.
Well, aside from the cleanup. According to city officials in Los Angeles, protestors in that city have left behind more than 30 tonnes of debris, everything from electric razors to dining room chairs, left behind by protestors after the movement in that city broke up. While such a mess may in many way be symbolic of the movement itself, many city workers now earning overtime have seen it as a real boon to their bottom line and evidence that wealth can be redistributed quite effectively.
“Our workers have already removed 25 tonnes of belongings from the area and we expect that to top 30 by the end. We have also vacuumed more than 3000 gallons of water from local catch basins and are in the midst of testing it for hazardous chemicals. This is going to be a long clean up,” said a spokesperson for the City’s public Works board. “It’s a mess.”
Much of the material is simply being dropped in the city landfills, but more than a few city workers have profited from the trash itself, picking through it to find worthwhile material.
“There’s some great stuff in here, totally usable stuff. Books, magazines, furniture, all kinds of things. I’m taking a lot of this stuff home. It’s really amazing what all these people without jobs are willing to just throw away. I’m going to make sure that it goes to a good home,” said one sanitation worker who asked not to be named. “This whole thing has been great, and at the perfect time. I hope they have an Occupy movement every year around this time. It’s going to be a good Christmas this year.”
There has been no word on future Occupy movements in the city, though it’s not exactly clear who we would speak to about such a thing.
It’s believed that similar scenes are taking place at Occupy site across the country, except for Oakland which has actually become cleaner during the movement.
“This is going to take a long time to sort through and to get right. It’s going to make it tough on the city too, financially, because of all the overtime. I know I for one am going to have to live with a lower bonus this year and that is something that will play out across the board. It’s really a shame that they did this to the city. A shame,” continued the spokesperson, who will be staying at home for Christmas this year.
Most occupiers in the city have returned to their parent’s homes to continue to movement in private.
