U.S. MARINES MISTAKENLY INVADE VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA
February 7 2012
Washington, D.C. – Few will argue that the United States doesn’t possess one of the greatest fighting forces ever assembled. Along with the peak armies of nations such as Rome, Mongolia, and Britain, the U.S. is really unmatched in its time, able to exercise military might wherever it goes and be hailed as a hero in those places while at the same time being vilified as an invader.
Equally, few will debate that in the modern era of warfare, war just isn’t as easy as it once was. In the peak days of Mongol might, for example, countries were conquered in weeks, it’s occupants made in subjugates almost before the army arrived. After more than a decade in Afghanistan, it has become pretty clear that such power simply doesn’t equate to military victory anymore, that is the reality of an equally armed world. Bullets are bullets, regardless of who fires them.
That long battle is now coming to an end and that is leaving a nation without a battle, and an army, a major army, without a real enemy, at least for now. That, it appears, may have resulted in a lot of restless energy on the part of U.S. soldiers which may be the root cause of their apparent storming of beaches along the Atlantic coastline, taking beach communities along the coast of Virginia and North Carolina very much by surprise.
“We deeply apologize for anyone who was not aware of the operations in the area. This was very much a planned exercise, designed to train our forces with a different type of warfare after more than a decade fighting in deserts,” said a Pentagon spokesperson. “We made an effort to ensure that all residents were aware of the exercise but clearly that effort was not enough. We can ensure that U.S. forces will not be invading the United States at anytime in the near future and that this exercise was not intended as anything other than a training session.”
The Marines were also joined by forces from France and Canada in the operation. It’s not clear what motivation those two nations would have for invading the U.S. coastline.
The forces did retreat after the initial operation but may be back at a later date.
“It was real scary, I tell you. It was nothing like I ever seen before and nothing like I ever want to see again. I was just trying to Cook my fish in my backyard and I saw all these soldiers storming the streets yelling at folks to get down and surrender. I just hid and ended up burning my fish. Shame too, it was a good piece of meat,” said Dwight, a local in North Carolina.
Similar stories were passed around the area with very few people even having heard of the exercise beforehand.
“We are aware that many people weren’t aware of the exercise and that is something for which we take full responsibility. In the future should any invasion by friendly forces be conducted on our beaches we will undertake a more robust effort to inform residents,” said a spokesperson for the city of Newport. “Frightening residents was not our intent. We want to make it clear that no forces hostile to the United States, either our army or any others, are currently at work on our beaches. If that changes, we will let everyone know.”
At least one hundred people were treated for surprise after the invasion.
