U.S. CYBER CRIMINALS STILL LAGGING BEHIND THE REST OF THE WORLD
December 15 2011
Washington, D.C. – With every new business opportunity there is inevitably going to be crime. Most crimes, those committed by individuals, are certainly conducted out of need or desperation but there will always be an undercurrent of criminal organizations who simply conduct business on the obverse of the norm. Those groups do not commit crimes to keep their families fed or even to gain something they cannot afford, their business is crime and they explore ways in which to exploit new business model.
The web has of course been the biggest new business the world has seen in decades, and may ultimately turn out to be the single biggest business opportunity in the history of the world, making it the ideal target for organized crime. Anyone who has ever received a too-good-to-be-true offer from Nigeria or Eastern Europe has come across these criminals as they extend their tentacles directly into people’s homes.
Almost from the beginning all of those offers have been extended from certain countries and few from inside the United States, the country with the largest user base. A combination of strong law enforcement and a robust web industry has led to few opportunities within the U.S., leaving cyber criminals very far behind the curve.
“We do okay, I mean okay but these other people do incredible numbers. Place like Romania, Ukraine, and Nigeria have been posting these incredible results and we just can’t even come close. It’s almost like we’re standing still and that really shouldn’t be the case. Every time we think we are gaining, we see their results and realize that they

have pulled even further ahead. It’s like a treadmill,” said one cyber criminal who preferred to remain anonymous. “Those guys certainly have laws that really help them along, but the biggest thing is the talent. Most of the people in the U.S. that can do really creative things have straight jobs in Silicon Valley and that leaves us with a very shallow talent pool.”
Some veteran organizations have done well in the new economy with the Gambino family reportedly netting $650 million over a number of years, their biggest take from any one enterprise.
“Obviously we’ve tried the gambling thing and the porn thing but we still can’t get ahead the way these other guys are able to do. It seems like every time we come up with a great idea they’ve already done it and are two steps ahead of us. The numbers are good, but there is so much more money out there we are losing out on,” continued the cyber criminal. “Money not gained is money lost. That’s just the way it goes in this business and these other guys are taking such huge chunks of our potential business that we are losing a lot. We’d try to strong arm them but that’s hard to do over the internet. It’s not like the old days.”
Outfits in South America and the Caribbean have also been coming on strong of late, though many of those are run by expatriate Americans.
“Unfortunately this explosive growth in some of these poorer countries is not
unexpected. The growth of the web has been extremely rapid and so all encompassing that most resources have been expended just trying to keep up with the pace of growth, never mind trying to find abstract ways to exploit the system. Inevitably as the growth rate declines so too will this disparity,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “There are so many young people in school right now that inevitably as the business contracts they will be forced into these more abstract fields, which will result in growth for U.S. enterprises. The question though, the important question, is whether or not it will be too late by that point. At least their grammar will be better, or at least it should be.”
Nigerian criminals have reportedly offered help to American organizations, after they make a small investment.
