U.S. JUST WAITING FOR BIGGER BOMBS BEFORE ATTACKING IRAN
January 29 2012
Washington, D.C. – There are a lot of components at play in any international conflict and the more components in the field, obviously, the more complex a situation becomes. In Iran there are many, many factors at play and all of those combined have made the ongoing stalemate with that country a very difficult task indeed.
Simply put, a full military offensive against Iran would like destabilize the region, possibly beyond repair, and likely create an environment far more dangerous than the one that currently exists today. Not acting, though, or even not acting enough could cause very similar results and so the U.S., NATO, and Israel are kind of in a pickle that may not have a great resolution no matter which option is taken.
Things, though, are starting to heat up and the United States in particular are making an effort to finally resolve the situation one way or the other, even if that means war, something they have been reticent to do so far. Now we have the apparent reason they have been so nervous about committing resources to the war effort, they just don’t have enough of them, but once they get new and bigger bombs the war will likely be on like Vietnam.
“We're developing it. I think we're pretty close, let's put it that way. But we're still working at it because these things are not easy to be able to make sure that they will do what we want them to. But I'm confident, frankly, that we're going to have that capability and have it soon,” Pentagon chief Leon Panetta told the Wall Street Journal regarding the new bomb program.
The biggest concern it appears is the strength of the current ‘bunker buster’ bomb which may be too weak to penetrate Iranian nuclear facilities.
Iran has refortified their facilities because they don’t want the Americans to blow them up, something which has continued to be one of many points of tension between the two countries.
“The simple fact of the matter is that in any war of any scale you need to have weapons that can destroy enemy targets. If you don’t have that, there is really no point to waging the war in the first place. The whole point is to attack the enemy and destroy his forces and without that ability war is kind of pointless, which explains some of this dithering in Iran,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “If you don’t have the bombs then there really isn’t much of a point to attacking the enemy. Bouncing bombs off their nuclear facilities will certainly be annoying but that isn’t what you want in a conflict. Annoyance doesn’t win wars.”
Failing the development of the new bunker buster, the U.S. still has lots of nukes.
“Of course Iran will continue to fortify their facilities as well because they don’t want their stuff blown up. That’s natural especially after spending so much time and money of making them. If nothing else, you just want to see things through to the end and that appears to be what Iran us doing. Also, they don’t want to be blown up which is reasonable,” continued Martinez. “That is going to be an issue for both sides in this conflict and one that will not resolve quickly. I guess in a way that’s the core of any conflict, the blowees and the blowers and neither side wants to lose.”
Iran has increased its budget for anti-bunker busting bomb bunkers in recent weeks.
