NYC TO CUT DOWN ON ROAMING AMBULANCES, POLICE CARS TO SAVE ON GAS

October 22 2008

New York City, NY – While everyday Americans are still learning how to cope with the ever worsening financial crisis, state and city officials are also starting to feel the squeeze. New York officials have announced that in an effort to reduce gas consumption they will be halting the roaming of official city vehicles and will only use the cars when calls are placed to emergency services. michael bloomberg

“We, like everyone, have to adapt to survive. Budgets are getting tighter and tighter everyday and we need to head off the squeeze before it starts to squeeze us and our employees,” said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “We are making a proactive effort to cut costs so that at the back end we won’t have to lay off these essential city workers. The best way to do that in this situation is to simply have them do less. The more they are on the street the more gas they will use, which is money we could be saving.”

Of course with no emergency services on the streets of the biggest city in the country critics of the plan are having a field day. From concerns of chaos on the streets, to the need to hire more 911 operators eating into the potential savings, there are few that have anything good to say about the plan.

“We understand that cities, especially big cities, are in a tight spot but there are obvious concerns for the safety and efficacy of such a plan,” said Brighton Lewis, President of local think tank URMPA. “Gas has started to drop in price so the savings would be limited anyway. Especially in the city that was so affected by 9/11 this is not a great idea.”building on fire

Bloomberg intends to stick with the plan despite the criticisms, saying that “New Yorkers band together. They don’t need to see a police every ten minutes in order to behave properly. I have faith in the good nature of New Yorkers.”
The other overriding concern is the general lack of availability of fire and ambulance services and the difficulty in getting where they are need quickly while being stationed at depots.

“Traditionally you would always have emergency services in the general vicinity of pretty much any location in the city,” said Scrape TV New York analyst Mike Wilson. “The response time is going to be significantly reduced as a result of this decision which of course means more people will end up dying and more building will burn down. They may be putting themselves into a self propelling situation. Fewer police means more crime and more injuries and fires. Fewer ambulances and fire trucks means those injuries and fires will be exacerbated. The potential here is for a massive disaster, or in a worst case scenario, New York might end up like Detroit.”

Mayor Bloomberg and other city officials believe they have weighed the risks andthat the rewards far outweigh the possible damage that might be caused.escape from new york cover

“Keep in mind that we aren’t the only ones suffering economic slowdown. Criminals of all classification have to deal with the same issues everyday Americans have to deal with. They are being affected by the economic climate just like everyone and we believe that will work to our advantage.”

We contacted a number of criminal organizations for comment but our calls were not returned. We also called officials in Detroit but the phone just continued to ring.”
